Industrial Plastic Shredder Selection Guide: Single-Shaft vs Double-Shaft, How to Match Plastic Recycling Scenarios?

In industrial plastic recycling, selecting the right shredder type—single-shaft or double-shaft—is critical to balancing efficiency, cost, and material compatibility. Both designs have distinct advantages, and their suitability depends on the specific recycling scenario, from small-scale sprue processing to large-volume mixed plastic handling.
Single-shaft shredders are characterized by a single rotating knife shaft paired with a fixed counter knife. They excel at processing uniform, medium-hard plastics such as injection molding sprues, PP/PE granules, and small plastic parts. Their compact design makes them ideal for workshops with limited space, and they offer lower initial investment and easier maintenance. For example, a small plastic processing plant handling 200-500kg of ABS sprue waste daily will benefit from a single-shaft shredder, as it provides sufficient capacity (50-150kg/h) without unnecessary complexity. However, single-shaft models may struggle with flexible or bulky materials like plastic films or large HDPE barrels, as these can wrap around the knife shaft and cause jamming.

Double-shaft shredders, by contrast, feature two intermeshing rotating shafts with blades that tear and shear materials. This design is built for heavy-duty applications, including thick plastic plates, large plastic pallets, mixed plastic scrap, and flexible materials like PE films or PVC hoses. The dual-shaft structure distributes force evenly, reducing blade wear and minimizing jamming risks. Large recycling plants processing over 1000kg of mixed plastics daily often opt for double-shaft models, as they handle high-capacity, diverse material streams efficiently. While double-shaft shredders have a higher upfront cost and require more installation space, their durability and versatility make them cost-effective for long-term, high-load operations.
To match the right shredder to your scenario, consider three key factors: material type (hard vs flexible, uniform vs mixed), daily processing volume, and space constraints. For small-scale, uniform plastic waste, a single-shaft shredder is the practical choice. For large-volume, diverse, or bulky materials, a double-shaft shredder will deliver reliable performance. Additionally, factor in future expansion—if your recycling capacity is expected to grow, investing in a double-shaft model early can avoid costly upgrades later.
